Mili is a film about an introverted, insecure, and timid girl slowly gaining the strength to stand on her own legs. In her childhood, she found it hard to meet the expectations people had from the daughter of a reputed Professor. On top of it, due to the early demise of her mother and the sickness until then, she missed the support of a mother's care. It is hinted that, her nature and lack of confidence can be attributed to her broken childhood. Amala Paul played the role of Mili and did a wonderful job.
Mili seeks the help of her father (Saikumar) or Nancy (Praveena) even for trivial issues. Her father, concerned about her and her inability to survive in the real world, forces her to solve her issues on her own. The dilemma whether to help her or not is shown wonderfully in the movie. Often, he helps her indirectly through Nancy, his student and Mili's local guardian. Nancy is very supportive and like an elder sister to Mili. At the same time, Nancy is sometimes strict and asks Mili not to bother her for silly issues.
Naveen (Nivin Pauly), Nancy's brother and a soft skills trainer, plays a fundamental role in Mili's journey. I really liked that Naveen is not always sweet with her. He is sweet when sweetness is required and harsh when harshness is required. He brings her out of her comfort zone and supports her on the journey to self-reliance. His greatest contribution is introducing her to few girls, who later become her good friends. These friends also play a significant role in changing her. Contrast this with Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam, where his change is primarily attributed to the heroine. Mili scored an extra point there. Furthermore, there is no evident love-track between Mili and Naveen. This again is a welcome change and puts it above other films of the same genre, like Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam.
Another flaw common in feel-good films that Mili avoids is unrealistic growth or achievements. The only achievement Mili can really boast by the end of the film, is self-reliance, self-confidence and a sense of self-worth. She manages to start a day-care and run it successfully - a job she is passionate about. Though small, her achievement is more than enough for her to lead a happy and contented life.
Mili's character, her quirks, her relationship with others and her slow, steady and believable growth made the film really wonderful.
